About Kristen Leigh Baker
Kristen Leigh Baker is a contemporary artist specializing in patented, wall-dependent sculptures of tactile sensory assemblage. Breaking the traditional boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture, her dimensional works feature intricately layered, ethically sourced plumage, hand-tied suede, and structural Lucite and driftwood elements.
Artist Statement
"I have always been an artist, even since I was a little girl. I would go around our house & sketch everything from my unicorns to tchotckes.
My obsession for interior design has also been a part of me since I was a child. I was always the one to move the furniture around in our house growing up. I would put my little legs on the wall and push the sofa with all of my strength.
My need for creativity carried on thru school and college. I took courses in ceramics, metals & jewelry making, drawing and painting. During college I was a model and discovered the fashion world. In love with that world, I moved to LA for make-up & hair school. I was a make-up artist & hair stylist in the industry for 20 years working on models, actors and celebrities. I moved around the country doing make-up & hair in LA, Minneapolis, Miami and NY.
I've always felt a connection to feathers & have been collecting them all of my life, each one a found treasure. Feathers are resilient enough to weather a storm, yet are delicate - ethereal. Each one is unique akin to fingerprints.
I dreamt up an innovative approach of visualizing feathers. My fashion background, passion for interior design & creativity all come into play when I'm creating my pieces.
My artwork is an alternative to traditional framed art, & add a textural element to your space. They evoke conversation. They can stand alone, or be displayed as a gallery on your wall.
While creating, each piece is a unique journey that can take unexpected twists and turns. I've learned to trust that process. Creating is the one place I'm not confined by rules. There's freedom in art and I possess a profound need to create.
