Velvet and Aurum
Velvet and Aurum
Kristen Leigh Baker | 2024
Medium: Ethically sourced hand selected exotic feathers, white feathers, natural weathered driftwood, "brushed" metallic acrylic, and hand-wrapped genuine suede lace
This captivating textile sculpture balances the striking, rich textures of the exotic world with clean, minimalist design elements. Suspended from a weathered driftwood bar, deep mottled peacock feathers are paired with crisp white plumage, creating a rich visual rhythm. Every feather is individually hand-tied with matte black suede lace, which extends to cleanly wrap both ends of the driftwood bar, framing the organic composition with deliberate, architectural boundaries.
A single, asymmetric detail elevates the entire work: a speckled feather positioned on the upper left, meticulously hand-painted with "brushed" metallic gold paint. This luminous accent introduces a subtle play of light against the velvety textures of the surrounding suede and feathers. Intended for luxury interiors, this sophisticated statement piece brings a refined, globally inspired elegance to spaces.
