The Prism of Feathers
The Prism of Feathers
Kristen Leigh Baker | 2024-2025
Medium: Hand-selected Malachite, Obsidian, and Tiger's Eye crystals, black pointer feathers, sterling silver beading, Lucite, and hand-wrapped genuine suede lace
This striking, wall-dependent sculpture masterfully marries the rich, tactile world of fine mineralogy with the rigorous precision of sacred geometry. Grounded by a sleek, modernist Lucite bar, the composition features a calculated arrangement of deep green Malachite, volcanic polished Obsidian, and light-catching Tiger's Eye crystals. Suspended beneath these stones are dense black pointer feathers, meticulously hand-tied with rich brown suede lace.
The organic plumage is layered deliberately to form a clean, triangular pyramid silhouette, introducing an architectural rigor to the organic mediums. Polishing the work are delicate accents of sterling silver beading and cascading suede fringe that add a dynamic, fluid movement. Bringing deep, grounding earth tones and subtle metallic reflections to light, this piece serves as a sophisticated focal point for luxury residential interiors.

Museum-Grade Bracket Installation Protocol
Architectural Presentation Note: This contemporary sculpture is designed for exhibition on custom optical-grade Lucite bracket shelves. This system ensures optimal distribution of weight, absorbs the depth variances of the integrated suede elements, and maintains a completely secure, floating presentation without wall adhesives or structural modifications to the artwork.
I. Inside Your Custom Installation Kit
Your hardware pouch contains the following collector-grade components:
- Two (2) Custom Optical-Grade Lucite Bracket Shelves: Engineered to support structural weight completely seamlessly while maintaining a floating silhouette.
- Enclosed Small Solid Brass Screws: Premium, low-profile decorative brass fasteners designed to anchor the bracket wall plates cleanly into studs or wall anchors.
- Pre-Cut Archival Dura-Lar Buffer Pads: Optically clear, 5-mil adhesive-backed polyester film sheets (.005" thickness) from Grafix. This acid-free, museum-grade material provides a permanent archival barrier against surface friction.
II. Step-by-Step Installation Procedure
Step 1: Map and Align Brackets
Hold your two custom Lucite brackets against the wall surface, spacing them evenly to align beautifully with the sculpture's top bar. Ensure at least one bracket lines up directly over a structural wall stud (recommended). Mark the screw placement holes on your wall.
Step 2: Set the Precision Pilot Clearances
Utilizing a standard hand drill and a micro drill bit sized to match the core of the brass screws, drill straight, shallow pilot channels into your wall marks.
- Installer Note: Pre-drilling is recommended when working with brass screws. It removes dense wood fibers, ensuring the screw threads can drive smoothly into wood studs without stripping or shearing the decorative heads.
Step 3: Secure the Brackets
Position the brackets over your pilot holes. Turn the small brass screws clockwise through the vertical wall plates until the clear bracket backings are anchored completely tight and flush against the drywall face. Do not over-tighten, to avoid cracking the clear acrylic mounting flange.
Step 4: Apply the Archival Dura-Lar Insulation
Peel the backing from the pre-cut Grafix Dura-Lar Film Pads and smooth them directly onto the flat, horizontal top resting ledges of the mounted brackets.
- Installer Note: Because this specialized film is completely clear and acid-free, it prevents long-term friction clouding between the sculpture and the brackets without adding visual bulk or yellowing under gallery lights.
Step 5: Seat the Assemblage
Lower the sculptureās top Lucite bar directly onto the cushioned Dura-Lar film pads on the brackets. Allow the integrated suede backing elements to rest naturally against the wall face to engage friction and lock the 3D plane flush.
Structural Engineering Note: This contemporary tactile sculpture is engineered to utilize integrated genuine suede fasteners as structural counterweights. These elements stabilize the clear optical-grade Lucite profile directly against your wall surface, absorbing depth variances.
